Future work
Although already proven to be very effective, I3S
does not work for all species with spots.
An even more challenging project will be to extend the software to identify individual animals with various
light/dark patterns.
This will require a completely different approach. See the figure below for examples of light / dark patterns used for identification.
The left photo shows the dorsal fin of the oceanic whitetip shark. The right photo shows the unique and changeable
transition pattern between the white belly and the darker back of the white shark.
